an ! As the little old woman and the little oldman could not run as fast as the gingerbreadman, they soon turned back. Now when the gingerbread man had goneon a little way, he met a horse. The horsesmelled the gingerbread man and then ranafter him as fast as he could. The littlegingerbread man ran on, calling out over hisshoulder: 121 THE GINGERBREAD MAN Bun, run, as fast as you can,You cant catch me, Im the gingerbread man ! And when the horse had grown tired andhad stopped, the gingerbread man called : Ive run away from a little old woman and a little old man,And I cau ruu away from you, I can ! Farther down the road he met a cow. Thecow had not been able to find much grass, soshe was hungry. When she saw the ginger-bread man, she ran after him as fast as shecould. But the gingerbread man was notafraid. He called back gayly j Bun, run, as fast as you can,You cant catch me, Im the gingerbread man ! Soon the cow grew tired of the chase.Then the gingerbread man laughed andshouted : 122

He then passed by a large field of grainwhere a great many mowers were busy atwork. The mowers had not been to theirdinner, so they were hungry. When theysaw the gingerbread man they dropped theirmowers and ran after him. But the ginger-bread man knew they could not catch him,so he called back : Bun, run, as fast as you can,You cant catch me, Im the gingerbread man ! It did not take the mowers long to wearyof the chase.
